Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the arrest, the magistrate said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's decision was the possibility of the former president's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a record of planning to seek refuge through a embassy office", a announcement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

International Reactions

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative American leader Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being kept in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to leave his home for healthcare, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate Lula and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the army and air force commanders. Lula was inaugurated without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, Brasília.

The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were detained.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, restore order and return him to office.

At the period, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
