Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels leading to the facility... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of thousands of British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
